Hi all, just a quickie to ask your opinion on my latest project. I'm currently planning the painting of my latest purchase, a 6mm half orcs army from irregular miniatures and I was painting the first unit as a test piece as your generic fantasy green skin types when a thought occurred. The sculpts are not exactly like, but not too far removed from the orcs from Bakshi's 1978 film version of The Lord Of The Rings. So I painted (or attempted to paint) another unit in an approximation of those beasties.
These beasties!
I'm in two minds as to which way to go. So I thought I would take a rough straw pole to see what you guys think. Here's some work in progress pictures of both units so far:
Both units so far, generic fantasy style on the left, Bakshi style on the right.
A side by side comparison of each units front rank.
Let me know what you think in the comments. Ta in advance.
Personally I've never liked green orcs. I usually go with grey or that sickly yellow "dead flesh" type colour GW made. I quite like the ones in the cartoon film. I'd go with the ones on the right. I haven't found the 6mm undead yet but I have a clearer idea of where I didn't put them! The hunt continues...
That's one for the Bakshi, I do know what you mean about the green orcs, now you got me thinking about a yellow skinned army!. No worries about the undead, I'm happy to take them off your hands if you don't want them but don't go to any trouble on my account.
SUCCESS!! Amid all the apocalyptic gloom the 6mm undead walk again! When you sent me those 10mm figures they were in an envelope with your address on - have you moved since then?
This won't help. The thinking side of my brain says go with colour because of the look with 6mm and how everything has to be over emphasised. The emotional part of my brain says - BAKSHI DARKNESS all the way.
I'd forgotten about that movie - loved it back in the days of VHS.
Yeah, it's a great nostalgic nugget of a film, we often go back to it just as a change. I'm leaning towards the dark side, just with maybe some bronze metal work or a different skin tone.

That's awesome thanks mate, I will try to do them justice. Still residing in the same charming 70's nightmare as detailed on the envelope.

DeleteGood point there from Duc - 6mm at a distance does need a bit of colour or the units start looking like little piles of mud!

ReplyDeleteDamn predictive text. I vote for the Bakshi look... The definitive orc for me.
ReplyDeleteIt was my first full colour orc, the fighting fantasy pictures were always black and white!.
DeleteTBH, I like the red troop but the Bakshi look says more "dark Horde" so that has it by 51-49
ReplyDeleteKind of my thinking too. Once I get all 12 units painted the mass effect will hopefully have a quality of its own.
