Onwards!

Hello all, at this time of the year a lot of us bloggerists like to look back and review the whosums and whatnots they have completed or been a part of during the last 12 months. I would also do this but the past year was a bit of a bust hobby wise. It started ok, with pike and spud making an early appearance.

The pike (the beginning of a 15mm Italian wars project...more on this in a mo...)

And the spuds (the first part of a still in progress Turnip28 project).

I then spent February piddling about with some tiny blocks of bumpkins:

Some 2mm test bases for a fantasy pike and shot faff or other (note I did get 2 armies done but didn't blog about them).

 And then...

That was about it until December, where I rebased one of the few finished units I actually completed in the year:

New pikes, same minis, different bases.

Ho and indeed hum. The year was not exactly a vintage one for blogging, real life well and truly got in the way and that's understating it quite a bit. However behind the scenes I have been more productive than it would seem. I have painted 2 full 2mm forces, a few 10mm forces to go along with them (2mm for mass actions and 10mm for skirmishes). I have all but finished my force for Turnip28 and built and undercoated a few more, I have also painted 2 small sci fi forces in 15mm scale for me and Sprinkling 3:the revenge to game with... I just didn't take pictures and was not in the sort of head space to want to write about it. I realise this sounds a bit like the school kid who really does have a girlfriend in a different town but can't offer any proof but I have been painting just to keep a grip on myself, the hobby time really has been a lifesaver this year.

So that's the year that was ( that can well and truly get in the effin' sea), what's next year going to look like?

Honestly? No flippin' clue but below is a list of projects that 1) I would like to at least do something towards, 2) will help my butterfly brain keep some kind of focus and D) be entertaining to read... possibly.

- I would like to keep on going with my 15mm Italian wars project. I almost have my 2nd pike block finished (swiss this time). I plan to paint small detachments for each force, maybe a pike block, shot unit, some artillery or cavalry etc that can be fielded together in whichever way I fancy ( such as the shifting alliances were during the period).  I intend this to be a slow burn project I can dip into as I reckon painting all those pike may well send me doolally if I do too many at a time!.

(At least I've coloured mine in!)

- Finish my Turnip28 force and paint up the rest I have built and get them on the table.

It's a great looking set of rules, and one I'm itching to get to grips with. Again I will probably dip in and out but hope to get enough done to get some games in by the end of the year.

- Crack on with more of my 2mm/10mm olde albilande bits so I can finally get some campaigns in my home brew setting done.

- I got given a copy of Xenos Rampant for Christmas which should be perfect for me and Sprinkling 3: the revenge to finally get some games in, this has school holiday project written all over it.

- The other rule book I got this year was the fun looking

A simple looking game for campaigning walking dead style ( groups of survivors competing over dwindling resources during a zombie apocalypse). This could be a great intro for the other folk in the house, I have ordered some red box 1/72 minis so we can build our own groups and use some of the boys toys for terrain into the bargain. Again this probably will be during the school hols.

These two boxes should let us build plenty of forces.

- Remake my paint set. Some of you may recall I made my own Paint set a few years ago. Well after quite some time I think I can do even better so plan to get a bit mad scientist and make a new one. This time tweeking the consistency of the paint and using a triad (base/shade/ highlight) system for each each colour or shade thereof a la Wargames foundry.

I have already ordered the dropper bottles I will need and have started to eye Mrs Sprinks paints with menaces.

That should give me plenty to be getting on with, I'm probably missing something and will undoubtedly get distracted by umpteen new shiny things as the year progresses but you know what they say about the best laid plans...

  ...'till next time...

Crivenshire marches!!!!

The revered colours of  CRIVENSHIRE you unwashed pleb!!.

Just a quickie to point you in the direction of the tabs at the top of this page (not the very top of course, just below the header or you could click here which will get you to the designated destination). I have bashed together some 'fluff' i believe the cool kids are calling it for the first shire in the ongoing campaign setting i have been building for far too long!. Thats right, i finally have something solid to show for it!!!. The page details some bits and bobs to give a feel of the character of Crivenshire and some rules for including some famous and unique troops that march to war with them in my One Hour Wargames variant!. Please feel free to have a peruse and as ever any comments are welcome.

Belching Bessie and the Kings Regulars give some Berkinshire scum what for!!.

A futile exercise in turd polishing!

Hello all, just a quick update to say i have tidied up my fantasy pike and shot add on bits for 'One hour wargames' by Neil Thomas by adding some pictures and bothering to spell morale correctly( you can check out the changes in the relevant tab above). I spent a while earlier on today taking a few 'arty' snaps with the help of the ever present Wronghammer re-enactment society ( all tastefully done of course!) to hopefully break up the 'dry' wall of text that are the rules i have bodged together, pictures a bit like this:

Nothing earth shattering but they add a bit of colour and context for the setting (i hope!).

On a different note i have been made homeless!!!. It began when me and the amazing Mrs Sprinks set the parental controls on our new updated wifi. All good (or so I thought) until I decided to log into this humble blog, apparently this little o' page of mine is BANNED under the settings!!. Its like getting home to find the bloody locks changed!!.

I'm off to change some settings......'till next time.....

Tuesday, 1 January 2019

If you see Mr Thomas, you don't know me o.k.!.

Sooooooo, i have been working on my Pike and Shot and Fantasy rules for a while, honest i have!. However i have become rather distracted by:

This has filled my head with lots of 'what if'' ideas, mainly:

'What if i could tweak the system to Pike and Shot fantasy?'.
'What if i could include all the different troop types in my setting with minimal special rules?'.    'What if i could bolt on a magic system?'.

   Well guess what.....I have!.

If you look in the tabs at the top of the page you will see a new tab containing all the rules required to play fantasy Pike and Shot One hour wargames!. Have a look and shudder at my ambitious stupidity!!!!.

There is more to add, the material is pretty rough, it needs a ruddy good tarting up so please excuse the mess and the Shire specific troops are yet to be added, i want to base and photograph them before i write them up so it may take a while, in the mean time the system still works for generic Pike and Shot. So please take a look, any and all feedback welcome!.

 Oh and

I hope your 2019 is full of dice, fun and 'little men'!!!.

.......'till next time......

Dragging Olde Albilande into the future!!

I mentioned in an earlier post that i was going to move the setting i'm working on into a kind of mock 17th century setting. This has given me plenty to ponder over the last few weeks, some things i am set on:

     - The mappe will not change.
     - The campaign will continue as if nothing has changed, all events will still have happened!.
     - The protagonists will remain, no shire will be harmed by the process of change (well                            Fossestershire wont bloody like it)!.

What i have been mostly thinking about is how the shires armies will look in the field. Now as a part of the same (until recently) united nation it is fair to say the shires forces would have been part of a royal army and therefore fit the pattern (more or less) decided on by the powers that be acting on behalf of the crown. This says to me that the basic troop types for each force will be almost (but maybe not quite) the same.
As its the (not) 17th century the main troops will be pike or musket armed soldiers. In olde Albilande the royal generals have spent time 'encouraging' each shire to raise a trained professional core of these troops to be called on if and when. These will be the spine of a field army (known as 'regulars'). Along side these troops various unpaid militia regiments exist, which will be organized and sponsored by the local lord or merchants in some capacity and the quality of their training and equipment will depend on their sponsors generosity. Some of these groups sport armour with the sponsors logo on or that have had their naming rights bought and paid for by merchants in order to ensure a fresh supply of lead shot!. It is therefore not uncommon to see regiments like The Olde undercrackers scrumpy irregulars or the Nightingales night soil removal experts musketeers for example!.

The march of the much feared 'fwffwykinnes reusable nappiee system irregular company'!!.

Some mini ideas would be:
Red Box Landsknechts with heavy pike.

And their Spanish pike and bills

Revells amazing 30 years war troops

A call to arms great ECW range

Anything but Mars 30 years war range really:
God, please....

.....make....it.....

....stop!!!
(all pictures taken from Plastic soldier review, which is great!)

The upper class still put their faith in polished plate and a powerful warhorse betwixt their legs!. The nobles still clad themselves in a full suit of armour and ride as heavy cavalry. They tend to band together on the battle field to 'give the unwashed what for!'. Most armies of a reasonable size will feature a unit of either mounted or dismounted knights.

'WHAT HO JOHNNY COMMONER, FANCY A TASTE O' ME LANCE...NO WAIT LET ME  REPHRASE THAT!'

The cannon will also be in mass effect across battlefields as an extremely desirable war time accessory, all armies will have some amount of them on display.

'Ere, you eyin' up me gun???!!!'

Skirmishers will be in use, either trained regulars or lowly irregulars or even one of the few elite ranger divisions (such as the Crivenshire Royal Storm Badger corpes or the Fossestershire Roughland penetration Company). These troops will normally be missile troops armed with muskets, crossbows or even hunting bows.

Where the differences will come in is in the specialists and odd troops native to the shires for which they fight, from mercenary companies to stream tanks, political activist collectives to unsanctioned wizards to grumpy old codger cults they will hopefully bring some colour and character to the field.

Which is cool because i have most of what i need to do this and i have started basing the minis already!. But i still have to get some bits and bobs....which brings me on to my ebay sales page i'm using to fund the project. Now most of the lots will end Sunday afternoon, at which point i will be posting the next round of lots, here's a sneaky peek for you lovely people:

 Lodsa Normans!

 Lodsa Macedonians

Loadsa Sea People

Even Ratskin Scouts!.

Have a browse tomorrow if you fancy a bargin!

All thats left is to welcome AKI to the wonky wold of Wronghammerness. AKI produces the rather brilliant Too much Lead which is well worth a peruse at your leisure. Welcome sir!.

....Anyway, 'till next time....

More Movements, whispers and the odd invasion

Before i go into the next battle in the long running campaign.....

I thought i would show the current movements and 'appenings from Olde Albilande:

As things stand:

I thought this time it would be easiest to go through each shire at a time, starting with:

'ROYAL' CRIVENSHIRE

Having taken a ruddy great pasting at Habituals Ridge the Crivenshire 2nd (much reduced!) have retreated in poor order away from The victorious Fossestershire 3rd. Rumor has it that their industrious leader sir Rallaigh of Choppa is hiding with a bodyguard in a hovel somewhere awaiting rescue!.
Due to the defeat the 'kinginthemeantimefornow(selfproclaimed) the Earl of Crivenshire has ordered the 3rd army to head off and contain the oncoming Fossestershire forces while he brings up his own 1st army in support. He is relying on promised support from Offenhammeshire to help turn back the oncoming Fossestershire  forces in the West, affording only the 4th army to cut them off.

 FOSSESTERSHIRE
Having driven off the Crivenshire 2nd and pushed into east Crivenshire the Fossestershire 3rd have been ordered to form a beach head for the oncoming invasion just west of Abblebridge. The earls own 1st army moves up to support them. However the leader of the 3rd, sir Physs has become obsessed with hunting down and taking hostage sir Ralligh of Choppa and is expending troops in gorilla actions to find him. In the East the Fossestershire 2nd advance to the Crossing of 'Both-ways' in order to engage the isolated Fossestershire 4th and lead a full invasion backed up as promised by the forces of Offenhammeshire. The Earl is keeping the 4th army in reserve.

OFFENHAMMESHIRE
The earl has massed all but one of his forces on the Crivenshire border, having pledged assistance to both the warring shires his intentions are unknown.

BURKENSHIRE
Yet to raise their forces Burkenshire looks on. The young earl not prone to warfare 'because all it will do is make the rich richer while the oppressed working classes suffer under the yoke of the crushing feudal structure that keeps them down.....oi, servant, wheres my bloody venison?'. However to the East seas a shadow is rising....the wind whispers the name......'Bitchenmarken'.......

LAMAVIC
......Meanwhile in Lamavic........
'Aye bhoys, looks like those lan' stealin' BASTARDS are havin' a war withoot us!, that cannie be right 'eh?, i reckon we's expected to invite our 'sels doon the way to join in, whatta yous lot think?!!'.

Next stop the crossing at 'Both-ways'.......'till next time.....

Thursday, 9 August 2018

Oh bloody hell, hes been thinking again!.

WARNING: THIS POST IS NOT AS INTERESTING AS IT MAY AT FIRST SOUND!

I've had a thought. Which is rare. And normally creates a ton of work for myself. And is a ballache of epic proportions. BUT NOT THIS TIME!!!! (yay!).

You see, i like a campaign (you may have noticed if you read these pages more than once!). Its my preferred way to game. But they are a lot of work to plan and do kind of hem you into a story arc you feel duty bound to play to a conclusion. The points in the previous sentence are not a complaint, these things are part of the appeal of campaign gaming, the developing story is a joy and takes the games in all kinds of fun directions and the challenge of coming up with a 'whats next' is a nice task to have and gets the creative juices flowing. However it can also be a block to more casual gaming, the 'pick up and play' types of games where you think up a scenario on the fly and chuck it together. Having reorganized my armies to fit the new setting i have been enjoying building i want to be able to change pace and direction now and again while still developing the setting of Olde Albilande as i go. So i thought 'why not have a non linked type of area i can plonk these types of games without following any type of shared narrative ' (confused?). So i came up with:

This header will be used to indicate games played in the murky depths of olde Albilandes history which will allow me to bring in some new factions that will struggle to fit the current arc, game one off bits and bobs and generally piss about outside of my campaign story lines while still maintaining and developing the setting as a whole. So when i fancy just chucking some forces on the table for a loose dust up i have somewhere to dump it!.

Anyway, thats what im thinking, although due to the ongoing state of the inside of my head this may well all be thrown out tomorrow! (in which case i  appologise for wasting the last five mins of your life with this post!).......'till next time......

The Battle of St Ronays Stump

Well, just as i was building some momentum life went and got all together too busy by half!. Still, i will not be deterred and the saga of the war of the four kings (that never actually happened) shall be told!. But to be fair i have a brief respite over the bank holiday before life goes back on the wonk for a while....ho hum. But, a respite it is and as there is a war on i will not be held back!, on with the next game!! (note the bank hols came and went with only the intro for this post written, it would be almost a week before minis saw felt!)........

THE BATTLE OF ST RONAYS STUMP

1st, the recent movements:

Points of interest:
- The Fossestershire 1st lead by Earl Cobbleholme himself (no less n'all that!) move with some determination to re-enforce the fossestershire 3rd who are moving with impunity toward the Crivenshire 2nd. The Fossestershire forces are all advancing on Crivenshire with violent intent.

-The forces of Crivenshire are also mobilized in order to counter this threat and prevent a full scale invasion.

-The 2nd army of Offenhammeshire are moving towards the border that meets with the two warring counties, their intention or orders so far unknown.

-Burkenshire remain unmoved, it is the wet season after all!.

-The earl of Fossestershire has sent messengers towards the Fossestershire 3rd to hold their position as he is on his way to help steamroller the Crivenshire 2nd.....will the message arrive in time?....

.....Errr, nope!, after the trap at Phlemm valley failed the leader of the Fossestershire 3rd, Sir Physs, knew his forces position would be discovered in short order, robbing him of any momentum his advance had given. To this end he ordered an aggressive advance to give 'a reet good bloody 'idin' to the opposing Crivenshire force and ordered scouts to range far ahead of his column to ensure the way was clear. His hope was to move with as much speed as he could to deny the local forces the right to choose the site of their meeting.
For his part the commander of the Crivenshire 2nd army, Lord Choppah of Ralligh was delighted to have the report of Sir Crowesfell from Phlemm valley. Not only would he have the honor of facing the invading army in the field before anyone else, he also now knew the position of the enemy and with a little more information from his patrols he also had a good idea of the size of the invading force. His army was larger than the Fossestershire force and the enemy were exposed, he knew the area and decided to take the battle to them to show the silly northerners the folly of their silly little uprising. To this end he split his forces into two, he personally led the bulk of his force to the west of Gibblet to Habituals Ridge, an area where he knew his forces would have the chance to take up an imperious defensive position from which to oppose the oncoming northerners. His other forces he placed under the command of sir Abblidge-Carniguie and sent east of Habituals Ridge to await an opportunity to outflank the Fossestershire army when it made contact with Lord Rallighs force bringing the advantage of numbers to bare and giving the Crivenshire army the element of surprise.
This plan would have been great if the Fossestershire 3rds scouting forces did not have the famed sir Bacckersfordde and his great snow eagle Keith Montgomary as its commander. Sir Bacckersfordde flew many times over the Crivenshire position, reporting on the movements of their troops and the splitting of forces. Armed with this knowledge Sir Physs ordered a force to sit out of reach of the defenders at Habituals Ridge but to make sure the enemy knew they were there. He then sent Sir Bacckersfordde with a large force to meet the oncoming flanking force, reasoning that if he could 'smash the bunch of flankers in their blimmin pampered faces by eck as like' he would break the back of the Crivenshire 2nd and gain his own opportunity to outflank the remaining forces at Habituals Ridge.
The Crivenshire flanking force of sir Abblidge-Carniguie and the Fossestershire troops of Sir Bacckersfordde met at an area known as St Ronays Stump (the name given to a large knotted old tree trunk said to be the site of many miracles performed by St Ronay in the 11th century, most notable of which was turning wine, 5 fish, 2 loaves and 4 bushels of herbs as well as some nice seasonal greens into a lovely cod mornay with a parsley and white wine sauce on a bed of steamed greens, served on oddly shaped plates in portions presented in wankey little piles with drizzles of sauce around them. It was noted the plates while tasty were too small for any of his disciples (who had walked for several days barefoot over rough ground to have an audience with the saint) to actually feel in anyway 'full' causing a small scuffle over the remaining fish heads, stems and bits of loaf. The site is a haven for pilgrims with highly developed pallettes and far too much time on their hands).
The battle is wrongly regarded as the first true battle of the war of the four kings by historians who wish to justify their bursaries by having somthing to argue about. They are, of course, just being knobheads.

Not many reports of the battle remain but as ever the Wronghammer plastic miniature fictional re-enactment society have recreated it using the pieces of information we do have to give us some inkling of what happened on that fateful day, so a big thank you to them for their efforts which have been used to create the report below:

THE BATTLE OF St RONAYS STUMP (AS FAR AS WE CAN TELL)

The field of battle, some areas of interest are shown above in the squares:

A) St Ronays stump itself, site of many slightly pretentious food based miracles.
B) The ruins of the small chapel build on the site after the passing of the sainted Ronay. Later turned into Olde Albilandes first ordained gastropub known as 'The Fish and Fisticuffs' after the famous miracle mornay.
C) The holy wood of Ronay, so called as many a traveler would throw up his holy gormet burger or lasagne along with his godly 7 pints of Roanys best or other guest ale (Bridgets Apron, olde brownes migraineanator and Badgers famous fuzzy dangler being some noted classics) into its blessed hallows.

 The battle
On the day of battle the northern forces of sir Bacckersfordde arrived before the Crivenshire flanking force and put out into a battle line to await them. The scouts of sir Abblidge-Carniguies force crested the ridge, and upon seeing the unexpected army barring the way returned to report back (and change their breeches). Sir Abblidge-Carniguies prepared for battle!.

the Wronghammer plastic miniature fictional re-enactment society line up to show what is regarded to be the positions of both forces at the start of the battle.

The Crivenshire left made up of a company of Crivenshire rangers with their bespoke smocks and bendy javelins. Lead by a section of the  brave knights of the Crivenshire 2nd lead by Sir Abblidge-Carniguies himself. Ahead of them are some of the mounted ranger division.

To the right of St Ronays stump holding the Crivenshire center are a proud block of crivenshire pike supported by bowmen arrayed to their flanks. The formation is lead by sir Whitterforde of Gibblet.

The left was held by a rabble of serfs from the surrounding villages eager to 'do thy bitte' in the defense of their homelands, ensuring they did so were a reserve contingent of light horse, driving them on.

(all Crivenshire troops are on blue bases with white trim).

Against them stood:
Two stout blocks of Fossestershires finest warriors supported by bows, lead by the ever dynamic and forward looking (read annoyingly positive) sir Bacckersfordde and his great snow eagle Keith Montgomary.

Guarding the right was the combined forces of the Knights of the Fossestershire 3rd and some light horse lead by the brooding sir Crankerton-Smithe, eager to assert himself after the defeat at Phlemm Valley. These were supported by a large group of northern irregulars conscripted from the settlements on the Fossestershire border.

(the Fossestershire forces have white bases with grey trim).##

THE BATTLE!!

The first action saw the Crivenshire horse move out to launch an attack on the infantry before them.
The rangers make a dash for the ruined church/boozer, a good place to pepper the enemy with pointy sticks!.

sir Bacckersfordde notes this action and states 'crikey, the enemy Rangers have taken up an good position to pepper us with pointy sticks!. Come Keith Montgomary, we shall show them what for!' With that he swooped into the ruins.....
Wiping out the rangers before they could get a volley away!.
In the center the Fossestershire foot advance into bow range of the pike, a missile duel would go on for several turns with no side giving way.

Over on the other flank the Crivenshire serfs take ground, only to stare down the barrel of the enemy horse!.
The horse promptly slam into them!. The one sided contest sees the villagers thrown back but they grimly reform before the enemy!.

The mounted rangers attempt a 'ride by', loosing their arrows at the Fossestershire foot, only to be mowed down by the combined firepower of the northern units!.

'Look yonder, Keith Montgomary' Chimed sir Bacckersfordde, 'The enemy leader and his silly knights!, let us end this battle forthwith!'. He plunged into the cream of the enemy!.

And is driven back by the Crivenshire nobility!.

The Fossestershire horse charge once more into the defiant serfs, clearly annoyed with the filthy commoners refusal to make way for their betters!.

This time it becomes too much for the plucky small folk who turn and run!. Their success is short lived as the reserve Crivenshire light horse take the opportunity to charge them, however sir Crankerton-Smithe is equal to the threat and orders his well trained men to counter charge!.

With predictable results!, left and right the Crivenshire horse bounce off the armoured Fossestershire cavalry!.
Seeing the battle turn away from them sir Whitterforde of Gibblet orders the pike forward!

Which allows  sir Bacckersfordde and his great snow eagle Keith Montgomary to fly behind them!.
As the Crivenshire knights watch the eagle fly behind the Crivenshire line they are attacked by a block of northern infantry, taken by surprise Sir Abblidge-Carniguie is unable to order a counter charge!.
And they are driven back with heavy losses by the well drilled warriors!.

On the other flank the Fossestershire knights and horse charge home again, wiping out the hapless Crivenshire light cavalry!.

As sir Whitterforde of Gibblet surveys the battlefield it dawns on him that his pike are surrounded!.
He orders his troops to back up to the holy stump to avoid being outflanked and prepares for a last stand!.
The inevitable charge hits home and despite dishing out damage to the enemy the numbers prove too much and the pikemen break!.

The scene at the end of the battlefield and a convincing win for the forces of Fossestershire!. With the Crivenshire plan is in tatters, what will become of the defenders of Habituals Ridge?.

Well that was fun!. I played this one using my own mass battle rules i am testing (working title Blood, Guts and something, something, something). I love the scale of the battle and it keeps the flow of battle pretty well. My main sticking point at the moment is the basing! (as ever!). The one man represents one man idea is fun and kind of gets over the abstraction multi based games give (not really my thing if i'm honest) but this is somewhat knackered by the fact that although the game itself took about two hours to play it took an hour to pack everything away afterwards!!. Something to give thought to going forward (it may be multi basing for ease of sanity!). Anyway i hope you enjoyed the report.....
......'till next time!.....
